Engineered wood fiber is an economical playground surfacing used on nearly 3/4 of all playgrounds in the U.S. because of its high impact absorbing qualities, yet firm, slip
resistant surface that, if properly installed, allows for wheelchairs
and strollers to traverse across it. Less expensive products such as
sand and pea gravel just aren't accessible.
The International Playground Equipment Manufacturers Assoc (IPEMA) certifies engineered wood fiber for impact attenuation (ASTM F1292), so that it is free of nails,
staples and hazardous metals such as lead, mercury and arsenic, and to
ensure that it is ground properly so that the product will knit together to meet
federal accessibility laws (F2075 test method for engineered wood fiber). You can see if
your engineered wood fiber surfacing is certified by going to www.ipema.org.
Our engineered wood fiber is certified by IPEMA per standards F1292 and F2075. In fact, our suppliers have their own test equipment to
perform testing on the engineered wood fiber in-the-field. That means that our engineered wood fiber suppliers can test
our products in all sorts of conditions (hot or cold) to make sure that the surfacing
performs properly.
Engineered wood fiber is the most economic option that meets all the
qualities and standards you need in a playground surfacing. You can contact us for more information about all the playground surfacing options or by calling us toll free to speak to a representative.
Generally, your playground equipment needs a minimum depth of 9 inches of engineered wood fiber underneath it and in the equipment's use zone (the area six feet around the structure in all directions). One popular method of installing engineered wood fiber is to distribute it on top of a layer of landscaping fabic that has been placed over 3-4 inches of
gravel. This type of natural drainage system can extend the life of your playground equipment surfacing.
